An intense, timeless favorite in hometown dive bars and pubs, the Irish variation of the classic boilermaker lives up to its name as soon as it hits your gut. It takes finesse to pound a Car Bomb without it exploding all over everything or breaking something and leaving you sucking down shards of your own shotglass — and is also one of the few drinks where time is of the essence. Prepare yourself for the nastiest thing you’ve ever had if you can’t pound it fast enough.
- 3/4 Pint of Guinness Extra Stout (or Draught if you really can’t handle the stout)
- 1/2 Shot of Bailey’s Irish Cream
- 1/2 Shot of Jameson Irish Whiskey
Some will drink the beer and take the shot as a chaser. Some will pour the shot into the beer and chug. But in 1979 in Wilson’s Saloon of Norwich, CT when Charles Burke Cronin Oat invented it, he dropped the shotglass into his beer like a depth charge and slammed it — and he wouldn’t have it any other way. And neither should you.
